"Sit still, be quiet, stop fidgeting and sit down..."

I have said that far too many times in my teaching career. Over the years, I've also watched students like this get misdiagnosed and mislabeled with the all too familiar label of "ADHD." Sadly many of those students are boys.

Boys will Be Boys

As a teacher, I have watched my girls sit perfectly still, while the boys in my room stood at their desk while swinging their legs back and forth. I watched them even run around the desk while I was teaching a lesson.

I have also watched these same boys soar in science and mathematics outperforming those same girls sitting still next to them. I came to realize that these boys had no problem learning despite being “busy.”

Unfortunately, in some cases, these children are being diagnosed and labeled with “ADHD,” as early as kindergarten. That’s a problem. Especially since it is their first time ever in a structured classroom.

Get on it!

I’m not a doctor, nor a medical expert but I know enough to know that some children are just busy and playful or may just need some extra attention.

As a parent you need to do your research and ask the right questions before you allow anyone to misdiagnose and mislabel your child!
